MISSA Fall Qualifiers

Fall Qualifiers Summary

Great Lakes Championship is MISSA's overall fall district championship, in high school sailing's default format: two-division doublehanded dinghy racing. Great Lakes will be at Chicago Yacht Club's Belmont Harbor location on October 21-22. This is earlier that in past years because we wanted the event to also be MISSA's qualifier for the Atlantic Coast Championship, allowing us to ensure that we send our best teams to represent the district. (Last year, some of our top teams were put in the unfortunate position of having to choose between the two events.)

Great Lakes Qualifiers There are twenty spots at the Great Lakes Champs and eighteen berths to the MISSA Shepherd Championship and these are awarded at a series of qualifying regattas. There are two rounds of qualifiers - the first round are "closed" league qualifiers - each League (West, Central, and East) has four berths to award at these qualifiers which are only open to teams from that League. So for example, a team from Central could not go to the West Qualifier. Note that the East League splits these four berths between an Ohio Qualifier and a Michigan Qualifier.  The second round consists of two "open" qualifiers, which any team from any league may attend. There are four berths awarded at each of the two open qualifiers, which are sometimes referred to as "last chance" qualifiers.

MISSA Cressy Qualifier, hosted by Lake Forest on September 16-17, is our district's singlehanded championship and is the qualifier for the Cressy National Singlehanded Championship, which will be in New Orleans October 28-29.  NEW THIS YEAR: At both Cressy Nationals and the MISSA Cressy Qualifier, there will be separate Girls ILCA6 and Boys ILCA6 fleets, in addition to an Open ILCA7 fleet. The top two sailors in each of these three fleets will advance to nationals.

MISSA Girls Championship is taking place September 23-24 at Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. This is a qualifier for the ISSA Girls National Invitational in San Diego on October 14-15, to which MISSA expects to have four berths. This is two-division double-handed event, and all competitors must be girls.

MISSA Great Oaks Qualifier is specifically geared toward developing teams. Unlike most high school regattas, it is a single-division regatta meaning that you only need one skipper and one crew to participate. Schools that have gone to Mallory or Baker nationals in the last four years may not compete in Great Oaks events. This year’s qualifier is September 23-24 at Pontiac Yacht Club near Detroit. Great Oaks Nationals is November 18-19 in New Orleans. We don't yet have a confirmation of how many berths MISSA has, but will share this when we find out.

MISSA Keelboat Qualifier this year will be held at Bayview Yacht Club in Michigan on October 7-8. The winner of the regatta moves on the National High School Keelboat Invitational in St. Petersburg, Florida on December 9-10.

Registration Deadlines for Qualifiers and Championships are firm. Schools missing the registration deadlines will not be allowed to compete. Please read make sure your team is registered on time. In general, NORs should be posted at least 30 days before the regatta, and registration links and deadlines will be in the NORs.  Also, your team has to be registered and ISSA/MISSA dues received in order to be eligible to register and compete, so please make sure you complete the registration process.
