Coastal #6 Sailed in Chilly Temps

Coastal #6, hosted by Savannah Sailing Center at it’s Lake Mayer facility in Savannah Georgia took place on 1/12/14. The event was originally scheduled for Saturday 1/11/14, however due to a cold front accompanied with thunderstorm activity, the event for Saturday was rescheduled for Sunday 1/12/14. Rescheduling took place on Friday 1/10/14. Sailors arrived to a chilly 48 degree temperature and very little wind which rapidly settled in at about 8mph out of the WNW. The regatta got underway on time at 9:45. The wind shifted to the north as the sailors would experience lulls ranging in the 5 mph range. The course was shifted slightly to the north during the day. Wind velocity started to shut off at about 2:30 in the afternoon and resulted in race 7A, followed by a switch of division and 7B, sailed back to back. There were several boat collisions during the day which did not result in boat damage, however the need for more care and rules work by the competitors was discussed at the awards presentation.

Congratulations to Richmond Hill High School who won the regatta by 18 points over Beaufort Academy. Lake Norman High School finished in 3rd place.
